Dr. Doris Derby is an educator, anthropologist, and photojournalist based in Atlanta. In the 1960s and ’70s, she was an active member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and the Adult Literacy Project. She used her camera to document the social and political activities of an African American community in rural Mississippi. Derby’s photographs reflect her interest in the under-recognized roles of women in the civil rights movement who put their safety and comfort on the line to fight for their communities.
