This flattened and reduced bronze evokes a line drawing that appears to float. An excellent example of Smith’s style of “drawing in space,” O Drawing exemplifies the lightness of form and perceptibility from a single vantage point that characterize Smith’s mature work. Smith included this piece in a series he titled Hudson River Landscapes in reference to a genre of mid-1800s American painting influenced by Romanticism—an allusion that signals Smith’s deep interest in the interactions between not only sculpture and painting but between sculpture and landscape as well.
