Born in 1924 in Frankfurt, Germany, Stone moved to New York in 1936 with her family to escape Nazi persecution. She learned photography as a teen and joined the Photo League, a left-leaning collective of photo documentarians based in New York, in the 1940s. She has worked all over the world as a journalist for Time and Der Spiegel, among other publications.
