Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was one of the founders of the artist group Die Brücke (The Bridge), established in Dresden in 1905. An avid printmaker, Kirchner produced over two thousand woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings, as well as hundreds of paintings and wood carvings. The jagged lines and harsh angular shapes in this woodcut are typical of his compositions. Through these distortions, Kirchner probed beneath the appearance of his models to suggest their psychological states.
