This pier table, one of a matching pair, is an excellent example of the New York Empire style and is often attributed to Duncan Phyfe due to similarities in ornamentation and form with those of Phyfe’s known work. The table is characteristic of the New York variant of American Empire style epitomized by architectural and Neoclassical elements—columns, pilasters, leaf motifs, and other details inspired by ancient Greek and Roman design.
