Rudolph Christ was the second master potter at the Moravian settlement in Salem, North Carolina. During his tenure there, Christ is credited with introducing a distinctive black glaze to Moravian pottery. A beautiful form characteristic of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this pitcher, with its extraordinary slip decoration, is in remarkably good condition; it is one of three known pitchers made while Christ was master. A primary example of Moravian pottery, it also represents the second generation of slip-decorated pottery from that unique colony.
