An experienced photographer of the civil rights movement, Bill Hudson often avoided hostility from the police by keeping his camera hidden under his jacket and only bringing it out at the optimal moment. He was in Birmingham’s Kelly Ingram Park when he captured the moment a police officer grabbed fifteen-year-old protestor Walter Gadsden by the collar and held him near a lunging dog. While the actions captured in the photograph are ambiguous—it is unclear if the officer is pulling the protestor toward the dog or pushing him from it—the image came to emblemize police brutality when it was published in newspapers and magazines across the country, sparking nationwide support for the civil rights movement.
