When acquired by the Kress Foundation, this unidentified portrait was attributed to Pietro Longhi (ca. 1701–1785), but in 1952, scholar of Italian art William Suida assigned it to Jacopo Amigoni. The effete quality of the sitter suggests that it might be one of the famous signers of the time, especially since Amigoni was friendly with and several times portrayed the outstanding castrato singer known as Farinelli. A drawing of a man by Amigoni in the Stanford University Museum of Art (70.142) shows a very similar elegant and bewigged gentleman.
