Jan Muller was a sought-after printmaker at the end of the sixteenth century. He was the son of an Amsterdam printer and developed a style modeled on that of Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558–1617), the premier printmaker in the northern Netherlands. Around 1600, Muller began to engrave portraits, mostly of important political figures. This portrait of Albert, Archduke of Austria, after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577–1640), is an example. Albert, son of the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian II, and Infanta Isabella Clara, daughter of King Philip II of Spain, ruled the Southern Netherlands from 1598 to 1621. Rubens was their court painter. In this engraving, Muller captures the majesty and strength of the archduke as well as the luxurious fabrics and details of his clothing.
