This wood engraving, made in 1928 by Timothy Cole, reproduces a 1903 oil on canvas painting of Theodore Roosevelt by John Singer Sargent (American, 1856–1925). Cole may have made the print to illustrate the official presidential painting in an American magazine. The composition, which depicts Roosevelt standing with one hand on his sip, another on a staircase, captures the president’s physical presence and self-assurance.
