Quaker Nell depicts an innocent religious woman who, the artist suggests, maintains her integrity and homespun ways in the city, suggested by the industrial buildings behind her. John Sloan was one of a group of artists called the Ashcan School because of their concern for changing social conditions, particularly slum life. In this painting, Sloan reflects an interest in the psychological and sociological status of his subject.
