Between 1945 and 1950, Laughlin produced a series of photographs of plantation homes in Louisiana supported by a Carnegie Fellowship from the Library of Congress. In Receding Rectangles, Laughlin photographed the porches of former slave quarters on Evergreen Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana, from the side to emphasize the simple, repeated geometry of the structures as they extend into the distance.
