Influenced by Post-Impressionism, the Pre-Raphaelites, and the circle of the contemporary artist Sydney Carline, Spencer’s works feature a dazzling array of color and multiple perspectives. In Redlands Road, Reading Spencer depicts a luscious enclosed garden. The sunlight breaking through the trees appears to dance on the color-saturated lawn. A row of pruned shrubs and hedges lines the exterior of the garden. The foreground is punctuated by two stone pillars and four potted plants that seem to emerge from the canvas, creating the feeling that the viewer has just stumbled upon this enchanting garden. The use of bright colors and an angled horizon line is characteristic of Spencer’s landscapes.
