Bentwood furniture by European manufacturer Gebrüder Thonet influenced much of twentieth-century European and American furniture design and has become indelibly linked with innovation in nineteenth-century furniture production. Although first created in Austria in the 1840s and ’50s, Thonet bentwood furniture was almost immediately imported, retailed, and widely used in the United States. The rocking chair form was made specifically for the American market.
