Charles Meryon’s etching shows only a sliver of the façade of the parish church Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris’s Latin Quarter. It is glimpsed through a narrow opening between tall, old-looking buildings. This perspective evokes the cramped atmosphere of a medieval city, although the church is fronted by a pleasant open square and flanked by open streets. Workers on the scaffolding along the building at right evoke the constant need for repair and the visibility of labor in the city.
