While artists such as Ansel Adams before him looked to the Sierras and other pristine lands in search of subjects to photograph, John Pfahl often turned instead to overlooked subjects in the human-altered environment. This image demonstrates Pfahl’s remarkable ability to take an ordinary subject—in this case a tarp-covered pile of sawdust—and transform it into a landscape of remarkable visual interest.
