A "Time" magazine review of Walter Pach’s solo show in 1935 read that he “set out to be a painter” but “found that he and everyone else had more fun when he criticized other people’s paintings.” Indeed, while Pach is best remembered for his role as art critic and supporter of early twentieth-century modernism, he also produced a large body of artwork, including many self-portraits. This example, from early in his career and executed with dark tones and loose brushstrokes, reveals the influence of his close friend William Merritt Chase.
