Tilman Riemenschneider, the greatest late medieval German sculptor, was remarkable not only for his technical facility but also for the expressive power of his figures. St. Andrew, holding the x-shaped cross of his martyrdom, has the elongated hands and face and intense expression typical of late Gothic art. The natural lindenwood was stained brown, perhaps in the 1800s, to simulate the appearance of aged oak but originally may have been painted with colors to render it more lifelike.
