These paintings of early Christian saints originally formed part of a large altarpiece made up of many panels, called a polyptych. The central panel of the Virgin and Child appeared flanked by saints, identifiable by distinctive attributes such as their clothing and the objects they hold. Recent scholarship has aided in the reconstruction of the polyptych, which Niccolò di Segna created for the church of San Maurizio in Siena, Italy.
