This woodcut portrays the story of St. Ermelinda, a woman who refused to marry and took up a life of asceticism and devotion to God. The two men at her feet are local lords who planned to abduct the female saint during night prayer. Warned by an angel (not pictured), St. Ermelinda escaped the lords’ advances. In the image, the saint holds a prayer book as she steps over the men's bodies—perhaps a metaphorical representation of her ability to triumph under faith's direction.
