Along with other painters of urban scenes, William Glackens embraced a brushy and impromptu style. Following his 1895 trip to Europe, he shifted to lighter subjects and a brighter palette, as in this charming arrangement of flowers and fruit. The objects on the table are of less interest to the artist than the colors and patterns that describe them. The cool blue background contrasts with the warm reds, pinks, and yellows of the subject to give the painting a luminous intensity and compelling character.
