A mother looks down lovingly at her nursing baby in this rare example of a drawing by the celebrated French sculptor Aimé-Jules Dalou. It is directly related to his plaster sculpture of the same subject, also in the High’s collection. Dalou received important public commissions for monumental sculptures but was also lauded for his more intimate representations of motherhood. In both the drawing and the finished sculpture, we are invited to share a private moment between mother and child.
