Though far from monumental in size, Results of Poor Housing and Results of Good Housing reflect Hale Woodruff’s early Social Realist style and the influence of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, with whom Woodruff studied. This pair of paintings was a gift from the artist to James H. Therrell, the director of housing for the City of Atlanta in the early 1940s.The stark contrast between this image and Results of Good Housing clearly expresses the artist’s support of Therrell’s progressive programs.
