The subject of this charming portrait was recently identified as Adeline Michael, a student of Woodruff’s at Spelman College. The painting had been in the collection of historian Horace Mann Bond, who served as president of Fort Valley State University in central Georgia where the painting’s subject, Ms. Michael, taught. The families were friends, and this painting later came to the High Museum through the Bond family.
