A single hand floats down from the top of the sheet like a sea anemone. Sleepy eyelids sink into shadow above plump, highlighted cheeks. Eugene Carrière, known for his interest in motherhood, drew these explorations of different views of a baby’s head and hands. Carrière cultivated a technique in which form dissolves into a misty haze. Although each truncated body part was executed independently in black and white chalks, their existence together on the same sheet of gray paper imbues the drawing with a sense of dreamlike mystery.
