Artist Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen often featured neighborhood cats in his compositions. A member of the Society for the Protection of Animals in Paris, he designed "Winter: Cat on a Cushion" (L’Hiver, chat sur un cousin) to advertise for the 1909 Exposition des Artistes Animaliers at the Cercle International des Arts. The work was so well received that he reprinted the piece as a decorative panel with "Summer: Cat on a Balustrade" (L’eté, chat sur une balustrade) as an accompanying design.
