Fernando and Humberto Campana utilized found materials to create the unique, colorful, decorative rolls that “upholster” this dynamic steel frame sofa. These materials are the starting point for the brothers’ design process, followed by form, and finally function. They first examine the inherent qualities of the modest, forgotten substances to determine how they can be best transformed. For this work, they began with rubber, fabric, and carpet to create the lively “sushi rolls” of the sofa’s upholstery. Once the materials and form are established, they elaborate on the function by studying the form’s limitations, capabilities, and ergonomics. The result is an energetic, fresh form that is contemporary and whimsical, infused with the bustle and color of their native São Paulo, Brazil.
