British immigrant Mark Hewitt handmade this monumental vase using traditional techniques, three types of local clays, and an alkaline glaze formula long associated with Southern pottery. The vase’s massive scale showcases Hewitt’s technical mastery of the medium, and its form reflects an itinerant study of clay that has taken him to such places as West Africa, India, and Asia. Born into a family of fine china manufacturers in England and trained in the studio ceramics tradition, Hewitt opened his pottery studio in Pittsboro, North Carolina, in 1983.
