In this lithograph, Norwegian artist Edvard Munch depicts British violinist Eva Mudocci, whom he had met in Paris in 1902. In this lyrical portrait, Munch frames Mudocci’s brightly lit face in a rhythmic body of dark, cascading hair. An initially erotic relationship between Munch and Mudocci morphed into a deep friendship that lasted several years. Munch called this lithograph Madonna or Madonna with Brooch, indicating its connections to his Madonna motif of the 1890s. Yet this depiction of Mudocci lacks the sexual undertones that permeated the earlier body of work, where Munch depicted a nude female torso, suggestively posed with head tilted slightly upward, eyes closed.
