This figure of a young woman in contemporary dress—a loose tea gown gathered in the back, which ladies wore at home in the late afternoon—exemplifies the artist’s predilection for small-scale sculptures expressing themes drawn from domestic life. Vonnoh’s quietly contemplative figure recalls the ethereal women portrayed by such fellow artists as Thomas Dewing, who was similarly inspired by the grace and elegance of ancient Greek terra-cottas excavated at Tanagra in the late 1800s.
