Tina Barney’s highly detailed photographs record mundane moments in the lives of her affluent friends and family, set in their posh East Coast homes. Amid well-appointed interiors, Barney choreographs telling postures and candid glances that allude to tension coursing just beneath the perfectly coiffed surfaces. In The Lipstick, Barney depicts actress Paz de la Huerta at the age of fourteen applying lipstick while her mother looks on in anguish behind her, telling a relatable coming-of-age tale for most mothers and daughters.
