In 1889, Paul Gauguin exhibited a suite of ten zincographs on yellow paper at the Volpini Café des Arts, on the grounds of the Paris World’s Fair. The prints, known as the "Volpini Suite," depicted scenes inspired by Gauguin’s recent travels in Brittany, Martinique, and Arles. This print, "Old Women of Arles" (Les vieilles filles à Arles), depicts four elderly women, including Madame Ginoux, a café owner in Arles. While the relatively barren landscape reveals little about the setting, the heavy cloaks drawn close around the women’s necks as well as the angular marks that constitute the tree at right suggest a strong wind.
