Influenced by the modern style of Post-Impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh, B. J. O. Nordfeldt experimented with both new and traditional techniques in printmaking during his studies in England and France. Upon his return to Chicago, he developed his own techniques to allow more than one color to print in a single impression. Nordfeldt linked the stylized aesthetic of Japanese prints with Western themes and his unique approach to coloring in this work, which was purchased by the Chicago architect Frank Lloyd Wright and presented as a gift to his daughter.
