Despite the poverty and turmoil in her life, Clementine Hunter painted exuberant scenes of everyday life at Melrose Plantation, where she lived for eighty years. Using vivid colors and flat forms, Hunter painted her pictures with a grace and ardor that she credited to God. This scene of a plantation wedding is split into two sections, with the wedding occupying the upper half of the painting and farmhands laboring in the cotton fields pictured in the lower register. Two “goosters,” Hunter’s imaginary hybrid bird, can be seen at the bottom.
