Governors Island in New York Harbor has a storied history. Originally hunting grounds, the island served as Dutch farmland in the 1600s, British and Continental army fortifications in the 1700s, a US Army base during the 1800s and early 1900s, and finally a US Coast Guard base in 1966 before being abandoned by 1996. In 2002, soon after the island was sold to New York City for development as a public park, photographer Lisa Kereszi was commissioned to document its eerily empty spaces and buildings, which included a school, a theater, a motel, and even a Burger King.
