The painter, architect, and engineer Hans Vredeman de Vries was among the most influential advocates of Renaissance thinking and practice in northern Europe. His books of garden design, ornamentation, and architecture demonstrate his expertise in the new system of perspective and his talent for turning architectural elements into visual novelties. These two designs for wells display de Vries’s characteristic sparse linear style that clearly maps the spatial relationships between the built elements. The cityscapes in which the wells are situated are as imaginary and varied as the wells themselves.
