A leader in the development of abstraction in the mid-twentieth century, John Ferren used notable innovations in geometric abstraction as a means of demonstrating harmony established by color relationships. Two, No. I emphasizes hard-edged organic forms with elements of pure geometry and vibrating, saturated color. Having exhibited his work in Paris with other abstractionists including Kandinsky, Giacometti, and Hartung, Ferren received widespread acclaim from the Parisian art community, including Gertrude Stein, who wrote in Everybody’s Autobiography, “He is the only American painter foreign painters in Paris consider as a painter whose paintings interest them.”
