The High’s permanent collection of photographs by Ralph Gibson has, with the generous support of the Kuniansky family, grown over the past ten years into one of the most important repositories of the artist’s work in the country. Gibson, a California native who now lives in New York, is celebrated for his dedication to developing and publishing mesmerizing bodies of work around conceptual points of departure. The use of thematic contexts is an enduring principle in Gibson’s practice, allowing him not only to create memorable and evocative single pictures, but to repeatedly generate coherent, non-documentary series that sing greater than the sum of their parts.
