Born in Germany, Werner Drewes studied art at the Bauhaus before leaving for New York in 1930 under political pressure. A founding member of the American Abstract Artists (AAA), Drewes experimented widely with color and included whimsical and recognizable symbols, such as the green arrows in this piece. Drewes moved between abstraction and figural expressionism throughout his career. He believed art should reflect the dynamics of the soul and could help elucidate the mysteries of the universe.
