Magdalene Odundo is drawn to art of the Mangbetu peoples from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She particularly loves the flared coiffure formerly worn exclusively by members of the Mangbetu ruling class. This elaborate, reed-reinforced hairstyle, called tumburu, has been a subject of fascination from the era of the Harlem Renaissance through today.
