An optician by training, Meatyard was mentored by Van Deren Coke, who headed Meatyard’s local Lexington Camera Club, and attended workshops led by Aaron Siskind and Minor White. Meatyard used his knowledge of lenses and vision to produce a number of photographic experiments that feature simple and elegant observations of light, focus, and motion. He is also known for his staged photographs of masked and costumed figures. This photograph is an especially fine example of the surreal effects achieved though Meatyard’s disarmingly direct style and camera technique. "Untitled" is a snapshot-like scene of an average-looking young boy. But the blur of the boy’s movement and, more importantly, the luminescent light transform this scene beyond conventional appearances. The image evokes questions about the innocence of childhood or the meaning of passages and transitions in life.
