Eugene Von Bruenchenhein, a self-taught artist from Milwaukee, took thousands of photographs of his wife, Marie, over a ten-year period during the 1940s and ’50s. Marie is endlessly re-imagined in these images; through the subtle details of various props, poses, and gestures, the artist transforms her from three-dimensional person to two-dimensional icon. Over and over again, Von Bruenchenhein’s photography visually enacts his romantic and sexual fantasies of capturing and possessing Marie as a queen, goddess, and pin-up girl.
