Like Agnes Martin, Atlanta-based artist Annette Cone-Skelton's labor-intensive work challenged the cold rationalism of minimalism and its movement away from painterly concerns. Although her untitled painting appears to be a monochromatic color field from a distance, its stoic quietude is belied by a painterly tension that unites its surface on a granular level. The narrow, vertical lines form a matrix of color bands discerned only at close range. Within them, subtle variations of color, including modulations of intensity, value and chroma, as well as the delicate, hand-painted quality combine to create an optical effect of vibration, as if the spaces between each line was electromagnetically charged.
