Kiki Smith is well regarded for both her sculptural and print work, which is often concerned with issues of Feminism, the human body, Catholicism, and the artist’s own life. This print was a generous gift to the museum from the artist to help establish the High as one of the largest public collections of her prints. Untitled showcases several features of Smith’s work in one place—an icon reproduced in multiple with just slight variations, intricate studies of human anatomy, and biological specimens. Smith’s interest in the bird dates back to her childhood, in which birds were kept as pets and associations with the Holy Spirit and the fragility of life and the environment were resonant.
