This monumental wood-turned bowl by Atlanta architect, artisan, and craftsman Edward Moulthrop exceeded his own prior size limitations, as he was forced to forge a special harpoon-like tool to adequately work such a deep vessel. Moulthrop’s ability to achieve dynamic patterns amid remarkably finished surfaces is a signature trait of his work, visible in this enormous chalice. For more than thirty years, his passion for the sculptural qualities of wood marked him as a master of contemporary wood-turning in America. Moulthrop began his long and creative career as an architect, achieving fame as the designer of the first Hartsfield-Jackson Airport Terminal in Atlanta; he later turned to painting and sculpture and finally settled on wood turning, the genre for which he is known.
