James Castle was born deaf in 1900 in Idaho and never learned to speak, sign, read, write, or finger spell. He created his drawings, constructions, and books out of the everyday materials that surrounded him, including ice cream cartons, cereal boxes, matchbook box covers, and Campbell’s soup labels. Castle’s corpus is wide and varied, typically small in scale, and consistently reveals a strong sensibility for geometric form and line with a tendency toward abstraction. This baby pram construction is typical in that it was created with found materials and its shapes were reduced to its abstract essence.
