This work belongs to a series of sculptures and drawings Al Taylor titled Latin Studies, which marked the artist’s transition from painting to constructing three-dimensional objects. Throughout his life, Taylor viewed himself as a painter—not as a sculptor—and referred to his ongoing three-dimensional works as “drawings in space.” This sculpture visually changes as the viewer walks around it. As one faces it head-on, diagonal lines and right angles coalesce to form an irregular circle. The shifting directions of the jutting articulations imply movement and depth, pulling the viewer’s eye in various directions.
