This quilt riffs on the traditional Log Cabin pattern, typically formed by grids of square blocks comprising concentric squares. This quilter created her blocks from right angles only, resulting in a composition alive with visual dynamism that is compounded by the variety of fabrics used. Patterns like Log Cabin and Housetop speak to the relationship between quilts and the rural architecture they were often created to provide comfort within. Just as hand-built structures were made from irregular layers of interlocking planks, improvisational quilts like this one were built from fabric scraps carefully pieced into quilt tops that likewise favored parallel and perpendicular lines.
