In pursuit of an exotic landscape, Dorothy Dehner and her husband, sculptor David Smith, lived for nine months on the Caribbean islands of St. Thomas and St. John, where she experimented with local subjects in all manner of media. The unusual perspective and oblique angles of this combined landscape and still life lend it an air of the surreal. Dehner framed the central subject, a spare but colorful cluster of local fruits, between two hands, as if demonstrating her process of scoping for the best view.
