A significant contribution to the Arts and Crafts movement in the early 1890s was made by women working independently, in colonies of artisans, or at schools and universities such as Newcomb College in New Orleans. Though the pots made at Newcomb were thrown and fired by men, it was the female students who executed the distinctive decoration (typically of Southern flora) that won praise from national critics.
